1) How was the Enlightenment global in its inspiration and effects?
ReplyDeleteEnlightenment helped people believe in the fact that "people are good", and it lead to many inspirations. Enlightenment inspired people to believe that the way of life is being equal. For example in France, which was shown to have the biggest impact from Enlightenment, was the overview of monarchy, radical new rights for citizens, and wars with European state lead to global conflict. We also see Enlightenment having a impact on people because Japanese men started to dress like European men, Chinese boats were sailing in European waters. There are many more of these examples because of how all the cultures took other cultures ideas and started to follow them.
2) Why were Asian influences more influential in the West during the Enlightenment than Western influences were in Asia?
I learned that Asia was the biggest influence on Enlightenment and it was where the Enlightenment started. The Chinese and Japanese ideas about government, which were Confucian belief's, were idealized. They also had Enlightenment despotism, and oriental despotism.

Out of all of the thinkers during this time I believe that the most influential was John Locke. The reason why I think he is the most influential is because he was the one that started the idea that everyone should be equal. This was one of the major ideas during the time, and you can see how different areas really tried to make people equal. You can see the change happen mostly in France and the Americas. We see this in France because you can see a major change in how they started to treat people equally. In the Americas the reason why we are independent is because of the idea that people should be equal. There were many revolutions that came with these beliefs. Not everyone and everything was equal at the time, but we today are still not equal.
I agree with Dominique on how John Locke was the most influential person in the Enlightenment. He was the one who stated the natural rights and equality of all. It led to people fighting for their freedom and people earning more equality to all. He began to establish how government should have natural rights as their law and it led to overthrowing some governments in order to establish freedom for all.

It led to the desire of having natural rights in their government so it led to monarchies being thrown over and revolt such as the people in the Americas. It also brought Napolean into power since he promised natural rights to the people who obeyed him.

3.I would say John Locke and his work with Jean Jacques Rousseau because they established the idea of natural rights for all human beings. The rights of all people such as freedom of religion. It gave people social freedom, equality, and other freedoms that were limited before. This is in our world today such as in America and other countries. In present times, people are still trying to earn their natural rights as human beings. John Locke and Jean Rousseau I would say the most influential because it was the beginning of earning human rights.
John Locke did influence the world greatly since people still follow the natural rights he spoke of, but I feel that Adam Smith was just as influential since he contributed to explaining how a nation can become wealthy. I feel like even without humans rights (I know this sounds bad buttttt) the nation wouldn't be able to continue without wealth.

The Enlightenment effected the world by creating a new thought process in the world. Conflict started to begin since everyone couldn't be equal due to people's different beliefs. The reason why the Enlightenment is considered global because all of these exchanged ideas spread throughout Eurasia, Europe, and the Americas which changed the world they lived in.

I think Adam Smith was the most influential thinker since he is considered the "father of economics." He created the Wealth of Nations including a description of what builds a nations wealth. I see his ideas in our world today such as division of labor and free markets.
Adam Smith was the most influential thinker but John Locke was able to convince people that we are all created equal and because of him we were able to be free today. I think he made it possible to allow most of the world back then to become free and have more rights.

Thoughts and ideas such as freedom and rights, being able to have political advancements, and people are good (Natural Rights). they also thought that religion was becoming bad because of the fact that it was influencing people. Since people started realizing that they were able to be free and equal this caused an outburst of fights occurring, on who was "right" and who wasn't. The Enlightenment also allowed people to share more ideas, such as the Chinese with the Europeans. The Chinese became a model society for them to follow so the Europeans started o take their ideas in. They incorporated their designs onto their boats, furniture and glass wear. The Enlightenment spread from Europe to Eurasia and the Americas. These new ideas and ways of living changed the way people viewed the world.

Because of his way of thinking many people attempted to become equal places. His idea had spread all around the world and as Dominique had stated, in the Americas we are able to be free today because of his way of thinking, it spread all the way to the Americas as well.
i agree with you on the idea that John locke was important but i dont think he was the most important as, without any of the thinkers the world woul;d not ever be where we are today. all the thinkers stated in this chapter contributed to the idea of either a people based society or a tyrannical government controlled one. because of this i also think that thinkers such as smith were important as without him, the economy we know of today with its laws and regulations would not exist to the extent that it is, and although natural rights are important, smiths ideas also lead to a revolution of independence that further contributed to freedom, just as Locke did.

Not only was Locke super influential, he was also advocated for social and economic freedom, as well as equality, which, for the first time, helped promote the idea that people should all be treated the same.

I agree with you that John Locke was a very influential thinker of the time because he advocated the idea of these rights we are born with, called natural rights, that cannot be infringed upon by any government. In the 1730s, the elite College Royal in France introduced Chinese studies to India. Muslim Turkey and Persia also influenced Western minds as a model of good and bad practice in government. In the Ottoman Empire there was admiration for religious tolerance and respect for law and minorities. The Enlightenment in the eighteenth century helped areas of the world share different ideas and use them as models to recreate how they did things. Europe was especially influenced by Asia. This also helped people see equality in everyone and that is why groups such as feminists were formed, because now even women were being looked at as equal.

They were all extremely influential, you can't really point one out that didn't help form the way we are living today. I think Voltaire and Montosquieu were really effective because they both had that idea of thinking for yourself and having freedom to your own opinion. Especially Voltaire who strongly believed in religious freedom because he thought it was right that people had a choice and had a chance to be different and believe in what they think is right. His idea of religious freedom is of course in our world today because here in America and most parts of the world, you have the choice to believe in whatever faith you want and no one can stop you.
I like your use of examples in explain all of your answers and giving reasons why you were correct, especially the first question. I also like that you do state that "They were all extremely influential, you can't really point one out that didn't help form the way we are living today." I think this was a very bright thing to say because you mention that it is really hard to pick just one when so many of them were so influential and did so many things to help human kind. From what we learned in class today, I would have to agree with you that Voltaire and Montesquieu were some of the most influential, for the reasons that they wanted to expand religious freedom.

Even though they all had there own purpose and brought about their own uniqueness and helped the Enlightenment era to be as good as it was, but i believe music was the most influential and it helped affect many other things in the years to come and even today driving our young society usually for the worse though. People like Mozart an original composer of the arts inspired many people to create other forms of music which also spread to many countries around and through Europe eventually spreading around the world, another form of European culture being spread around.
I think your choice is really good, its different from other peoples choice and I forgot about Mozart. He is an original composer and did inspire others, well donw!

The Enlightenment was global in its inspiration and effects because it spread to many different regions. Though it was mostly French philosophers that had kicked off the Enlightenment it was quickly spread to other locations such as, China, Japan and the Ottoman Empire. While people traveled to these places they took the idea of the Enlightenment with them. Having the idea that people are all good and shouldn’t be controlled they were open minded about new forms of government that wouldn’t suppress them or be like the type of government that they already had. French and Europeans started to admire the government of the places they traveled to, they especially took a liking to the Confucian ways and the Ottoman Empires ways. In all of these places they took in new types of culture items. An example is the Chinese starting to wear European Armor.

The Asian people were mostly happy with what they already had, they were already powerful enough, though they did make some adjustments, such as the armor that was mentioned before.

I believe the Enlightenment thinker that was the most influential was John Locke(Riding the Bandwagon!) Thought there were many influential people during this time I believe John Locke was the most influential and made the most contributions to this time. John Locke was one of the leading philosophers, and as so it was his job to learn about academic discipline such as fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. He was also a political theorist which is someone who engages in constructing or evaluating political theory, including political philosophy. He argued for liberty, religious tolerance and rights to life and property, which I believe is one of the biggest things that anyone could ever possibly argue for, it should be a thing you have as soon as you are born. These were called the “Natural Rights” because he too believe it was a given.

Along with this contributions such as fashion and leisure had become influenced such as Japanese men beginning to dress like Europeans and Chinese styled boats finding their way along Europe.

Because asian influences especially Chinese ones played positively in the role of improving the European societies that the thinkers inhabited. Many European thinkers did not like the idea of organized religion and thus because of Confucianism in China, China was a great influence on how they perceived European society should look. A thinker, Quesnay even went so far as to persuade the French throne to imitate a Chinese imperial rite. Even if one disagreed with the way of the Chinese, if lead to more influence by them as Diderot and Montesquieu leaned more toward an Enlightened Despotism rather than a strong powerful governmental force as Voltaire believed.

I believe that probably the more higher up influencial thinker of this time would have been Montesquieu because we see his influencial theory of liberty for the people today all over the world and we don’t really see much tyrannical force in the world today, or a “strong, well-advised government” as Voltaire wanted. I also feel that smith was a very important voice during this time as with his view of supply and demand, it affected the market in ways never before seen. His idea that self interest could be left to serve the common good led to the Wealth of Nations which encouraged the American revolution creating the country we have today, “the homeland of economic liberalism”.

The Chinese were very influential in the Enlightenment, so much to the point where other places, like the Europeans incorporated their designs onto everything, from boats to the clothing on their backs.

I believe that Adam Smith was the most influential Enlightenment thinker because of his profound effects on economics and taxation. Not only did Smith believe that taxing people was an infringement of their liberty, he also believe that taxes were evil and disruptive of economic growth. Smith had also figured out how to make markets work to produce the right amount of goods and services, and how competition helped to keep prices low for the consumer while building incentives for producers to offer a wide array of products. Smith’s work can be seen in free markets.
I like your choice Ruchi, Adam Smith's ideas allowed for capitalism to fully develop in the century following. He is very important today as a father of economics.

For the most part, people were fascinated by the Asian culture and sought to change their cultures and ultimately become more like them. I think it’s fair to say that all the enlightenment thinkers were quite influential in their own ways but perhaps the most accepted was Voltaire and his theories regarding religious freedom and freedom of thought.
Yes Raj, I agree with you as well because Voltaire had ideas that our very similar to America present day such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion etc. The only reason why I don't believe John Locke is the most influential is because John locke supported ideas that were very similar to early American colonies when England controlled America and you know what happened after England was in control so much over the people.

New governments, such as the idea of Enlightened Despotism, incorporated many different ideas, mainly from Asia, into European government. The Europeans had a strong veneration for the Chinese, due to their intelligence and their way of governing the people.

I agree with both of your statements. Both Voltaire and Locke believed in great ideals regarding the freedom for equality, religion and education. Empires such as the Ottoman Empire executed these beliefs due to their diversity in religion and education of the lower class. Other empires restricted these freedoms.

I believe that the most influential thinker was Voltaire because he believed in religious freedom. He was the most influential thinker because he believed that everyone had the right to think. Everyone was able to make their own choices and believe what they want. This showed people that no matter where they are they can believe in what ever they want. Till this day, this still exists, in many parts of the world (especially in America) you can believe in any religion you want and you won't be wrong.
I sort of disagree with you because the idea had already existed in several places. The Ottoman Empire was a successful example of it and many empires/ countries had taken note of it. No one had really listened to him at the time. While there are more than half the countries having religious freedom, I still think that Adam Smith was more influential because he directly affected lives because his ideas dealt with the economy which almost always changes someones life.

The Enlightenment influenced the French and American Revolutions, created new ways of thinking (such as Enlightened Despotism- the French had this), and created new movements (the Romantic Movement/ Cult of Nature). The Enlightenment allowed for Asian ideas and thoughts to come to Europe and by extension to the New World. This also allowed for changes to occur everywhere.

Asian influences were stronger than Western influences because Asians were more advanced and more successful at what they did than Europeans were. Until only a few centuries ago, Europeans were considered backwards by everyone except themselves. They have always looked to the Asians for inspiration because they had better, more solid governments, were able to promote their ideas to the public and keep get them to accept it, and were able to keep peace much better than the Europeans who were always fighting and having problems with their governments. The Asian influences were usually more advanced because they always thought ahead of Europeans. For example, they were thinking scientifically with nature for centuries before the Europeans had the Scientific Revolution. Europeans by comparison were always one step behind them.

I believe that the most influential Enlightenment thinker was Adam Smith because he basically created the economic system that most of the world uses today. He didn't like the mercantilism that England was using and instead talked about division of labor, the economy being automatic and able to fix itself but is messed up because of taxes, monopolies, etc, and the government focusing on other things. China I believe is the most successful example of his ideas. They have a huge gross domestic product (they create a lot of things that everyone uses), they participate in international commerce and are big players in it, etc. They have a very successful economy and I believe it is because they, maybe not intentionally, followed Adam Smiths ideas on economies in his The Wealth of Nations.
And suddenly I'm rethinking choosing John Locke as the most influential thinker. I still feel like John Locke played a ginormous role in all of the progress being made overall and Smith just affected the economic systems and that in whole Locke was a bit more of an influence than Smith was. He took the idea that was being (in some sections) preached by the Ottomans for years prior, and took it worldwide. good job gurl

ReplyDeleteEnlightenment was global in its inspiration and its effects because as we see thinkers like Montesquieu bringing to the table the idea of separation of power and no one person or body of people being to strong in France, we also see these ideas coming up and being applied in North America, during the American revolution. Enlightenment brought not just the idea that people were good, but brought along the idea of natural rights (law) and laissez faire. Enlightenment essentially gave power to the people, and it was no stranger to anyone.

Asian influences were stronger than western influences for the fact that the point in the progression the westerners were at was at the point where asia was years ago. Asians already had these solid concrete beliefs that people in the west mocked and copied, and already had been standing tall among other countries. Their governments were more successful and were much more sound in the way their rulers were succeeded, and the governments brought together short but frequent periods of riches not only in wealth but in culture as well.

In my opinion, I think John Locke had to be the most influential of the enlightenment thinkers. He found people to be born with natural laws and natural rights that couldn't be taken away which was a large step forward in the progression of the period. Many fought against what he believed, but the idea of the natural law stood through. It created somewhat of a basis of equality (or what "equality" was to be considered then). It's eventually seen in the United States Constitution, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

The thinkers of Western Europe such as John Locke were able to have their ideas not only influence their country, but other continents. Locke's ideas were influential in the French Revolution's purpose and outcome as well as in the constitution of America. Asia also influenced Europe, because of the way intelligent leaders used their absolute power to help people. People like Voltaire advocated for there to be one educated ruler, rather than a hereditary nincompoop that was very selfish. Overall though, enlightenment caused a new way a thinking and also influenced several very large rebellions and revolutions.

If I had to choose, I would say that it's a tie between John Locke and Rousseau, because John Locke had extreme influence in the revolutions of France and America since he originated the idea that all people are created equal, as well as many key aspects of government such as checks and balances. Rousseau influenced revolution as well, but his influence wasn't just political. He influenced education with the idea that young minds need to be educated and also inspired many composers in the arts. Rousseau had a much larger scale influence in enlightenment, but Locke had a much more direct and intense influence in politics, so both of these people were equally influential during the enlightenment period.

Locke's political philosophy was that people were by nature free and equal in that they weren't all subjected to monarchs. Some Europeans called it oriental despotism and others believed it to be enlightened despotism. Despotic monarchy believed in ruling over people against their will, common to the practices of tyranny yet despotic monarchy was hereditary.

Montesquieu the French social commentator and political thinker was definitely my favorite as he proposed the idea of rule of law and political freedom. Political freedom was a new idea during this time as most believed in political absolutism. This idea gave people more representation in government and began to divide the power amongst the citizens/followers instead of just the leaders. Which at the time was different from western Europe but has now made its way into most of our existing governments, the idea of having 3 different branches in our contemporary government to ensure that not all the power goes to one individual is a great example of Montesquieu's idea.

Especially writers whose books were able translated and sell more copies, making the ideas written be spread faster throughout Europe while inspiring others' thoughts as well. An example would be Voltaire, whose work was read in Sicily and the Balkans, plagiarized in Vienna and translated into Swedish. These thoughts from other people like Voltaire, which involved freedom, natural rights, trade and politics, were able to start people questioning what they really believe in and how they can make others see and agree to their point of view. This battle of who was right and what was right, raised conflicts and more interaction as they brought others to their side or decided to push people away, like the Japanese, whose policy excluded foreigners, had kept Europe in ignorance of Japanese life. Either way, the enlightenment spread all over the world, and it's influence and interactions can be seen from anything from European art, furniture, architecture, poetry, written works, transportation, and ect. For example, the duke of chamberlains yacht that had been designed with Chinese influences.

- Asian influences were more influential in Western Europe then Western Europe to Asia because the European thinkers were with a 'mission' to find something that they could use and 'help them improve the societies they lived in.' So Europeans had gone to Asia with a purpose, to change their societies, since Asia influenced these thinkers and they wanted to influence their societies while Asia was just stuck in center of attention. The rich were able to make it famous and apply it to their 'taste', and help the ideas spread faster. Philosophers took the Chinese as 'wise' as people in places like England in the 1760s were replacing works of Aristotle and Plato with works of the wise Confucius. So that's why Asian influences were more influential in Europe.

- I believe all thinkers were influential in their own way, each had an idea and that idea had caused controversies because people debated and fought over these ideas. Voltaire and Montesquieu had brought controversies between the ideas of the Chinese, freedom, religion and government, also bringing Chinese culture to rise and influence Western Europe. Wollstonecraft brought light onto women's rights and started the debate over women equality. Also, John Locke had caused the thought of 'Natural Rights' to light and affect the future the most as his idea was spread. Even if I didn't list all of them, each of these thinkers were all influential to shaping the future and history itself, their ideas were the mere start of a revolutions and the shaping of peoples thoughts on the world.

Japan was one of the more successful governments along with China in which only the samurais in japan suffered whereas the other social classes were able to succeed. I believe that John Locke was the most influential person during the enlightenment period because of his ideas that all men are equal and born with natural rights. Although some may argue that he supported the rule of monarchs, he believed that people had natural rights and helped to influence almost every modern governments laws.

As a result, France became the ideal place to exchange thoughts and ideas which helped France become a strong empire based on its ideas and the Ottoman Empire became even more tolerant of other religions although they had to pay extra taxes. Groundbreaking ideas from people such as John Locke and Denis Diderot is what help influence and spread enlightenment to a much broader scale.

In my opinion, John Locke was the most influential enlightened thinker during the Enlightenment because his ideas were unprecedented. He believed in the equality of men (with some exceptions) and their entitled birthrights.

An example of Locke’s idea is in school, we are all treated equally. Well for the most part, hopefully.

ReplyDeleteThe Enlightenment's effects on the world were of huge significance, as they brought about brand new ideas of human individuality and rejection of ancient theories, much of which was never seen in certain portions of the world before. Chinese ideas were brought to France, which prompted thinkers to reexamine their government and the power of the monarchy, even while detractors sided with His Majesty and supported the old government. The following French Revolution was the first of a series of coups that removed tyrants and instated democratic ideas, then unheard of since Ancient Greek times. Napoleon Bonaparte attracted followers by taking up Enlightenment ideas, but once he seized power in the form of an emperor, he then proved that the status quo of power in the monarchy would still survive in different forms, even though citizens were smarter and now criticized government openly in some areas, a development previously disallowed by institutions such as the Church.

Asia's growing influence on the Europeans came partly because of the efficiency of their governments, as opposed to the splintered and monarch-driven kingdoms of Europe. Confucianism was seen as an ideal form of government control, as enlightened despotism. China, on the other hand, mostly avoided European influences because accepting outsiders went against Confucian beliefs, which opted for isolation, or otherwise willing ignorance to external areas of the world.

I think that Montesquieu was the most influential thinker of the Enlightenment, because his radical ideas on government influenced many major empires to come in the years that followed. The idea of 'checks and balances' in government was revolutionary, and became a major part of the French and American constitutions, to name a few. Succeeding forms of government all adopted a bureaucracy over a royal family or monarchy in the following century, showing a major step forward, the elimination of kings in favor of people-run societies, which I feel had a massive effect in World history. We see Montesquieu's system of checks and balances in the French republic just before Napoleon took the throne as an emperor.

France was one part of Europe that wanted to follow Confucian beliefs and wanted their monarchy to change and be overthrown rather than keep the power UN-equal and just have people sitting on the bottom. Another way Asia influenced Europe was also Japanese art on boats and yachts when they docked in France, where the design of dragons and the surroundings were influenced by Japanese art. They were more influential than the western influences because Asia specifically; China having Confucian beliefs isolated other parts of the world that did not believe in the same things they believed in therefore excluding outsiders whom they believed to be ignorant.

-I believe the most influential Enlightenment thinker was John Locke. He believed that all people should have their own natural rights from when they were born. He also believed that "All men are created equal"- for the rule of Law. One part of the world where this takes place is the Americas. They believed that "All men are created equal" Stated in the Declaration of Independence, In more present times, this includes different Minorities, religions, genders, social and economic classes and even more. Even though the law is said to be "enforced" ; in some ways in present day, a lot of different sorts of religions, minorities, genders etc are still judged and not thought of as equal.
